Typical Applications
ISO7831 is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Fieldbus Communication, Motor Control, Power Inverters, Isolated SPI/UART Interfaces, Medical Equipment, Automotive Battery Management.
Industrial Fieldbus Communication
The ISO7831 provides reinforced isolation for fieldbus interfaces such as PROFIBUS and Modbus, ensuring reliable data transmission in noisy industrial environments. Its 100 Mbps data rate and 70 kV/Β΅s CMTI handle high-speed communication and transient immunity, while the 2/1 channel configuration supports bidirectional data flow. The wide supply voltage range (2.25 V to 5.5 V) allows interfacing with various logic levels, and the 16-SOIC package fits compact industrial modules.
Recommended
Motor Control
In motor drives, the ISO7831 isolates gate driver signals from the microcontroller, preventing high-voltage transients from damaging control logic. Its high CMTI (70 kV/Β΅s) ensures stable operation during fast switching, and the reinforced isolation (8000 VPK) meets safety standards for industrial drives. The 100 Mbps data rate supports high-frequency PWM signals, and the wide temperature range (-40Β°C to +125Β°C) suits harsh motor environments.
Recommended
Power Inverters
The ISO7831 is used in power inverters to isolate control signals from high-voltage power stages, ensuring safe and reliable operation. Its reinforced isolation (8000 VPK) and high CMTI (70 kV/Β΅s) protect against voltage surges and fast transients common in inverter applications. The 100 Mbps data rate enables real-time control communication, and the 16-SOIC package is suitable for compact inverter designs.
Recommended
Isolated SPI/UART Interfaces
The ISO7831 provides galvanic isolation for SPI and UART communication between microcontrollers and peripheral devices, preventing ground loops and voltage mismatches. Its 100 Mbps data rate supports high-speed SPI clocks, and the 2/1 channel configuration accommodates typical SPI signals (SCLK, MOSI, MISO). The low propagation delay (11 ns) ensures minimal timing skew, and the wide supply range allows interfacing with 3.3V and 5V logic.
Recommended
Medical Equipment
The ISO7831 is ideal for medical devices requiring reinforced isolation to protect patients from electrical hazards. Its 8000 VPK isolation rating and compliance with IEC 60747-17 ensure safety in applications like patient monitoring and diagnostic equipment. The high CMTI (70 kV/Β΅s) prevents interference from electrosurgical units, and the wide temperature range supports reliable operation in clinical environments.
Recommended
Automotive Battery Management
In battery management systems (BMS), the ISO7831 isolates communication between battery cells and the main controller, ensuring safety and reliability. Its reinforced isolation (8000 VPK) withstands high voltages in EV battery packs, and the wide temperature range (-40Β°C to +125Β°C) suits automotive environments. The 100 Mbps data rate supports fast cell monitoring, and the high CMTI (70 kV/Β΅s) prevents false triggering from motor noise.

Key Differentiators
- Reinforced isolation rating of 8000 VPK (vs ISO7741DW)
- High CMTI of 70 kV/Β΅s (vs ISO7741DW)
- 3-channel configuration with 2/1 (vs ISO7742DW)
Design Notes
Place 0.1 Β΅F decoupling capacitors close to VCC1 and VCC2 pins to minimize power supply noise. Use a 10 Β΅F bulk capacitor on each side if the supply is shared with other components. Follow the recommended PCB layout in the datasheet to maintain isolation creepage and clearance distances.
Ensure the isolation barrier is not bridged by copper traces or vias. Maintain at least 8 mm clearance between the high-voltage and low-voltage sides. Use a ground plane on each side, but do not connect them across the barrier except through the isolator.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum ratings for supply voltage (6 V) or input/output voltage. The enable pin (EN) should be tied to VCC1 if not used. Ensure the input signals are within the recommended operating conditions to avoid latch-up or damage.
Compliance Information
RoHS compliant per TI product page. Not AEC-Q100 qualified; for automotive, consider ISO7741DW-Q1 if available.
