PIC16CE623T-04I/SS Overview

The Microchip Technology PIC16CE623T-04I/SS is an 8-bit PICmicro family OTP (One-Time Programmable) CMOS microcontroller operating at 4MHz, packaged in a 20-pin SSOP (5.30mm body width) with 896 bytes of program memory organized as 512 x 14 words, 96 bytes of SRAM, and 128 bytes of on-chip EEPROM data memory. The device features 13 digital I/O pins, a 133 ns instruction execution time at 4MHz, and a 35-instruction RISC instruction set with single-cycle execution for most opcodes (branches are two-cycle). It operates from a 3.0V to 5.5V supply across the -40C to +85C industrial temperature range and integrates Brown-out Detect (BOD), Power-On Reset (POR), and a Watchdog Timer (WDT) with its own on-chip RC oscillator.

A PIC16C-series microcontroller is a member of Microchip's classic 8-bit RISC family, sitting in the hierarchy: microcontroller -> 8-bit MCU -> embedded controller -> semiconductor. PIC16C devices use a Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses, enabling simultaneous instruction fetch and data access, and they are programmed via the EPROM/OTP process using Microchip's PM3 or earlier development tools. The "CE" suffix specifically indicates the EEPROM-data variant that pairs 1k-class OTP program memory with byte-erasable EEPROM for non-volatile parameter storage.

Key features that differentiate the PIC16CE623T-04I/SS include its 4MHz maximum clock, very small footprint (20-pin SSOP at 5.30mm body width), low power CMOS design with <2 mA typical operating current at 5V/4MHz, and the addition of an internal EEPROM data array not present on plain PIC16C62X OTP parts. The "-04I" suffix denotes 4MHz oscillator rating and industrial temperature range, while "/SS" identifies the SSOP package. The "T" suffix in the part number indicates Tape and Reel packaging for high-volume assembly.

Architecturally, the device uses a RISC core with 7 special-function hardware registers, an 8-level deep hardware stack, and direct/indirect addressing modes. The on-chip EEPROM (128 bytes) is accessible through dedicated read/write routines and supports >1M erase/write cycles endurance, with data retention rated >40 years per Microchip's device family specification.

Typical applications include low-cost appliance controllers, simple sensor signal conditioning front-ends, automotive interior subsystems (non-safety), battery-powered remote controls, consumer white goods user interfaces, and industrial timer/counter modules. The combination of OTP program memory, internal EEPROM data, and small SSOP footprint makes it well suited to high-volume cost-sensitive designs where field firmware updates are not required.

When designing with this device, observe that OTP program memory cannot be re-programmed in-circuit; firmware must be fully validated before programming. Always provide adequate decoupling (100 nF + 10 uF) on VDD/VDD2 and place the MCLR pull-up within 25 mm of the pin. The WDT should be enabled in any application where firmware lockup could cause unsafe behavior.

Typical Applications

PIC16CE623T-04I/SS is suitable for 6 applications: Low-Cost Appliance Controllers, Remote Control Transmitters, Industrial Timer and Counter Modules, Sensor Signal Conditioning Front-Ends, Automotive Interior Subsystems, Consumer White Goods User Interfaces.

🏭

Low-Cost Appliance Controllers

The PIC16CE623T-04I/SS fits appliance controllers (washing machines, microwave ovens, dishwashers) where the OTP memory holds fixed firmware and the 128-byte EEPROM stores user-selectable cycle parameters and end-of-cycle counters. Its 13 I/O pins directly drive relay coils, triac gate circuits, and 7-segment LED multiplex displays without external logic. The 4MHz clock and 35-instruction RISC core complete state-machine tasks in under 200 ns, well below typical AC line-cycle timing budgets. Industrial temperature rating (-40C to +85C) handles kitchen and laundry-room thermal stress, and the SSOP-20 footprint drops onto compact mainboards.

📱

Remote Control Transmitters

Battery-powered IR/RF remote controls benefit from the PIC16CE623T-04I/SS's CMOS low-power design and small SSOP-20 footprint, which minimize PCB area inside handheld enclosures. The 13 I/O pins drive a 4x4 keypad matrix with interrupt-on-change wake-up on PORTB, and the 128-byte EEPROM retains learned-device codes across battery swaps. Brown-out Detect prevents corrupted EEPROM writes when the battery approaches end-of-life, and the 4MHz internal-execution capability easily generates 38 kHz IR carrier modulation with a single timer and PWM channel. Industrial temperature rating ensures reliable operation in cold garages and hot dashboards.

🏭

Industrial Timer and Counter Modules

Factory-floor timer/counter modules use the PIC16CE623T-04I/SS to sequence conveyor operations, count encoder pulses, and drive indicator LEDs. The TMR0 8-bit timer/counter with external clock input accepts quadrature encoder signals up to 4 MHz, and the WDT prevents lockup during EMI transients common in motor-drive cabinets. The on-chip BOD holds the MCU in reset during the inductive-kick brownouts that occur when nearby contactors open. The 13 I/O pins connect to optocoupler-isolated 24V inputs and outputs, and the SSOP-20 surface-mount package withstands the vibration profiles of panel-mounted equipment.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning Front-Ends

Sensor interface boards (thermistor bridges, RTD conditioners, simple pressure transducers) use the PIC16CE623T-04I/SS to digitize analog signals, apply linearization coefficients stored in the 128-byte EEPROM, and output calibrated serial data. The 13 I/O pins share duty between the analog-front-end control lines and a UART/I2C/SPI master interface to a host controller. Although the PIC16CE623 has no on-chip ADC, its low cost and small footprint make it ideal as a companion controller to an external ADC. EEPROM storage of per-sensor calibration data eliminates manual trimming during manufacture.

🚗

Automotive Interior Subsystems

Non-safety automotive interior subsystems (mirror controllers, ambient lighting, seat-position memory, keyless-entry fob receivers) use the PIC16CE623T-04I/SS for its compact SSOP-20 footprint and industrial temperature range. The 13 I/O pins drive LED current sinks and read Hall-effect position sensors, while the 128-byte EEPROM stores last-used mirror/ seat positions. The 4MHz clock and BOD ensure clean operation through the cranking-voltage dips and load-dump transients typical of 12V automotive buses. Although not AEC-Q100 qualified, the industrial-grade part is widely used in non-safety aftermarket accessories.

📺

Consumer White Goods User Interfaces

User-interface panels for refrigerators, air-conditioner indoor units, and washing machines integrate the PIC16CE623T-04I/SS to scan capacitive touch keys, drive LCD segments, and communicate with the main appliance MCU via UART. The 13 I/O pins handle up to a 4x5 matrix keypad plus a small direct-drive LCD, while the 128-byte EEPROM stores user preferences (temperature setpoints, mode presets) across power cycles. The 4MHz oscillator budget is sufficient for software-UART baud rates up to 9600 bps with interrupt-driven reception. The SSOP-20's 5.30 mm body width fits slim panel designs.

Design Notes

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 14) and a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum polymer capacitor on the same VDD node, sized to ride through 50 ms of VDD droop. The PIC16CE623T-04I/SS draws <2 mA active at 4 MHz/5V but Brown-out Detect resets during VDD dips below ~4.0V; a sufficient bulk capacitor prevents nuisance BOD events during motor inrush on shared supplies.

Route the MCLR pull-up resistor (typically 10 kOhm to VDD) within 25 mm of pin 4. If using ICSP programming header, place a series resistor or diode-isolated path per Microchip's programming specification to prevent the on-board pull-up from interfering with the programmer's Vpp high-voltage (~13V) signal. Keep the crystal or resonator within 10 mm of pins 15-16 to minimize stray capacitance and EMI pickup on the OSC lines.

OTP program memory cannot be re-programmed in-circuit. Always validate firmware with a Flash-equivalent part (PIC16F627/628) before committing to OTP production. EEPROM writes must follow the EECON2 unlock sequence (write 0x55 then 0xAA to EECON2); omitting this sequence silently fails and may indicate the write was incomplete. Also note that the PIC16CE623 lacks an on-chip ADC despite the ANx pin names - analog functions are reserved for future variants and these pins are digital-only on this part.

PORTB pins RB4-RB7 feature interrupt-on-change wakeup; ensure mechanical switches connected to these pins have 100 ns hardware debouncing because the IOC latches are very sensitive. For long PCB traces to external connectors, add 100 Ohm series resistors near the MCU to dampen transmission-line ringing. The RA4 pin is open-drain and requires an external pull-up if used as an output.
