Typical Applications
TPS73801DCQR is suitable for 6 applications: FPGA/ASIC Point-of-Load Regulation, Audio Analog Supply, RF and PLL/VCO Power Rails, Industrial 24V Bus Post-Regulation, Precision ADC/DAC Reference Supplies, Battery-Powered Portable Systems.
FPGA/ASIC Point-of-Load Regulation
The TPS73801's fast transient response and 1.0A output make it ideal for powering FPGA core and I/O rails where load steps of hundreds of milliamps occur in microseconds. With 300mV dropout at full load, the device maintains regulation when fed from an upstream 3.3V or 5V switching converter output. Its adjustable 1.21V minimum output supports modern low-voltage cores, and the 45 uVRMS noise floor prevents jitter degradation on PLL supplies.
Recommended
Audio Analog Supply
With 45 uVRMS output noise (up to 100 kHz) and a PMOS pass element, the TPS73801 delivers clean analog rails for audio codecs, op-amps, and headphone amplifiers. Placed after a 5V switching rail with 10uF ceramic output capacitance, it removes switching ripple without introducing its own noise. The reverse current protection prevents audio circuitry from back-feeding the regulator during power-down, avoiding audible pops.
Recommended
RF and PLL/VCO Power Rails
RF synthesizers and VCOs demand low-noise, high-PSRR supplies because phase noise is directly coupled from the power rail. The TPS73801's 45 uVRMS noise and fast loop response suppress ripple from upstream buck converters, keeping PLL spurs low. Use the adjustable version set to 3.3V or 5V with a 0.1uF high-frequency bypass capacitor placed within 5mm of the VCO supply pin for best phase-noise performance.
Recommended
Industrial 24V Bus Post-Regulation
The 20V maximum input supports post-regulation after industrial step-down converters on 24V-derived rails. Controlled quiescent current in dropout prevents current spikes during brownout events common on factory floors, and reverse voltage protection guards against wiring faults without external series diodes. At 1A output the SOT-223 tab dissipates heat effectively onto PCB copper, supporting power-dense DIN-rail and PLC I/O modules.
Recommended
Precision ADC/DAC Reference Supplies
Precision data converters require quiet analog supplies to preserve effective resolution. The TPS73801's low noise floor and good line/load regulation keep supply-induced errors below the LSB level for 16-bit converters. Driving the converter AVDD from 5V with the TPS73801 set to a clean 5V, followed by a precision reference, is a proven TI reference design pattern for SAR and delta-sigma ADC front ends.
Recommended
Battery-Powered Portable Systems
Operating from 2.7V input with only 1uA shutdown current, the TPS73801 suits battery-powered designs using 1-cell Li-Ion or multi-cell alkaline stacks. The EN/SD pin allows the system MCU to disconnect loads during sleep, and reverse current protection prevents battery back-charge through the output when input power is removed - eliminating external blocking diodes and their voltage drop, extending battery runtime.

Design Notes
At VIN=12V, VOUT=5V, 1A load, the TPS73801 dissipates 7W. The SOT-223 (DCQ) tab must be soldered to a substantial copper pour - at least 1 square inch of 2oz copper - for reliable operation. For continuous dissipation above 2W, verify junction temperature stays below 125C using datasheet theta-JA and layout derating curves, or reduce the input-to-output differential with an upstream buck stage.
Place a 10uF ceramic input capacitor and 10uF ceramic output capacitor within 5mm of the IN and OUT pins respectively. The TPS73801 is stable with low-ESR ceramic output capacitors; adding a 0.1uF bypass directly at the ADJ pin improves transient response. Keep the ADJ resistor divider trace short and away from switching nodes to avoid noise coupling into the feedback loop.
Do not exceed the 20V absolute maximum input rating - industrial transients on 24V bus systems must be clamped upstream. The EN/SD pin is active-low; pulling it high shuts down the device to under 1uA. When using the adjustable version, use 1% tolerance resistors for the ADJ divider to maintain output accuracy, and never float the ADJ pin during operation.
Compliance Information
