PIC16C57C-20I/SS Overview

The Microchip Technology PIC16C57C-20I/SS is an 8-bit RISC CMOS microcontroller with 20 MHz maximum clock, 3 KB (2K x 12) of One-Time-Programmable (OTP) program memory, 72 bytes of RAM, and 20 digital I/O pins, housed in a 28-pin SSOP (Shrink Small Outline Package). It executes one instruction every 200 ns (5 MIPS) and features a 12-bit wide instruction word with 8-bit data path, a two-level deep hardware stack, and a single 8-bit timer/counter (TMR0).

An 8-bit OTP microcontroller is a programmable logic device that stores its application code in non-volatile One-Time-Programmable memory instead of flash; once programmed, the code cannot be rewritten. The PIC16C57C belongs to the PIC16C5X family, which sits within Microchip's classic PIC mid-range 8-bit microcontroller taxonomy (8-bit MCU -> RISC microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor). This 5X family was the original low-cost, high-performance PIC architecture that established Microchip in the 8-bit MCU market.

Key features include 33 single-word instructions for easy programming, direct/indirect/relative addressing modes for both data and instructions, 8-bit real-time clock/counter (TMR0) with 8-bit prescaler, power-on reset, watchdog timer for reliable operation, and code protection to safeguard intellectual property. The C-grade silicon revision also adds improved oscillator tolerance and lower power consumption versus the original PIC16C57A baseline.

Architecturally, the PIC16C57C uses a Harvard-style RISC core with separate program and data buses, enabling simultaneous instruction fetch and operand access. The OTP EPROM cell is fabricated in CMOS for low static current draw, while the 12-bit instruction width gives 2:1 code compression versus competing 8-bit MCUs that use 16-bit instruction words. Industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C) ensures operation in harsh environments.

Typical applications include automotive body electronics, industrial control systems, appliance controls, security and alarm panels, simple sensor interfaces, and consumer products. The 20 I/O pins make it suitable for keypad scanning, LED driving, and relay control. With its 100 ns instruction execution time, it offers an order-of-magnitude higher performance than competitors in the same price category.

When designing with the PIC16C57C-20I/SS, remember that OTP memory requires programming before insertion; design for programming socket access or in-circuit programming. The 28-SSOP package is suitable for space-constrained applications. Use the watchdog timer to recover from software lockups, and apply proper decoupling (0.1 uF ceramic) near VDD to suppress switching noise.

Typical Applications

PIC16C57C-20I/SS is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Control Systems, Appliance Control Boards, Security and Alarm Panels, Automotive Body Electronics, Consumer Electronics Remote Controls, LED Display and Sign Controllers.

🏭

Industrial Control Systems

The PIC16C57C-20I/SS is well matched to industrial control systems thanks to its 20 MHz (5 MIPS) processing headroom, 20 general-purpose I/O pins, and industrial -40C to +85C temperature rating. Its 3 KB OTP memory comfortably holds typical PLC-style ladder-logic replacement code, sensor-scanning routines, and PWM actuator drivers. The 8-bit TMR0 with 8-bit prescaler generates precise timebases for control loops, while the watchdog timer recovers the system from electrical noise-induced lockups common on factory floors. Engineers choose this part when an assembly line needs a low-cost deterministic controller that runs the same firmware for years without field updates - OTP memory prevents accidental code corruption.

🏭

Appliance Control Boards

Appliance control boards for washing machines, dishwashers, microwave ovens, and HVAC thermostats rely on the PIC16C57C-20I/SS for its 25 mA per-pin drive strength (direct LED and relay coil driving) and OTP code protection that locks in validated firmware at production time. The 33 single-word instruction set simplifies assembly-language programming for state-machine-based user interfaces with keypads and 7-segment displays. With 20 I/O pins, a single PIC16C57C can scan a 4x4 keypad, drive a 4-digit display, control 2 relay outputs, and read multiple temperature sensors - all at 5 MIPS with deterministic interrupt response, eliminating the timing jitter that plagues low-cost appliance designs.

🎥

Security and Alarm Panels

Security alarm panels and PIR sensor modules use the PIC16C57C-20I/SS to scan multiple zones, drive piezo buzzers, and manage keypad arming sequences. The 2-level hardware stack and 33-instruction RISC core deliver deterministic interrupt response under 200 ns - critical for tamper-detection timing where late responses trigger false alarms. OTP memory protects the alarm logic from field-tampering attempts, while the 72-byte RAM is sufficient for zone state buffers and debounce counters. With 20 I/O pins, a single PIC16C57C handles 8 alarm zones, a 4x3 keypad, status LED indicators, and the siren driver - replacing multiple discrete logic ICs and reducing BOM cost by 40-60%.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics

Non-safety automotive body modules such as seat controllers, mirror adjusters, window lifters, and interior lighting use the PIC16C57C-20I/SS for its industrial temperature range (-40C to +85C), robust CMOS design, and OTP code protection. The 20 MHz clock provides enough throughput for LIN-bus-like bit-banged communication, while the 20 I/O pins drive multiple motor relays and position sensors simultaneously. OTP memory ensures validated firmware cannot be field-modified, which is required by automotive OEM change-control policies. For AEC-Q100 qualified variants, migrate to PIC16F57-E/SS in the same 28-SSOP footprint.

📱

Consumer Electronics Remote Controls

IR remote controls, RF transmitters, and simple consumer devices leverage the PIC16C57C-20I/SS for its low cost, 2.5-5.5 V VDD range (single 3 V coin-cell operation), and ultra-low standby current via the sleep instruction. With only 33 instructions, the entire remote-control firmware fits in 1-2 KB of the 3 KB OTP memory, leaving room for protocol variants. The 8-bit TMR0 generates precise carrier frequencies (38 kHz, 40 kHz, 56 kHz) for IR modulation, while 20 I/O pins handle key matrix scanning up to 64 buttons. OTP memory ensures production firmware cannot be cloned, protecting OEM intellectual property in high-volume consumer products.

💡

LED Display and Sign Controllers

LED matrix displays, scrolling message signs, and decorative lighting controllers use the PIC16C57C-20I/SS to multiplex row/column drivers and execute bit-banged communication protocols. At 5 MIPS, the PIC16C57C refreshes an 8x8 LED matrix at over 100 Hz with zero visible flicker, while 20 I/O pins drive up to 16 multiplexed LEDs directly. The OTP code protection prevents firmware theft by competitors, and the wide 2.5-5.5 V supply range supports both 3.3 V logic-level LED drivers and legacy 5 V designs. Industrial temperature grade ensures outdoor sign operation from -40C winter cold to +85C summer heat without timing drift.

Design Notes

The PIC16C57C-20I/SS operates from 2.5 V to 5.5 V VDD. Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 28), with a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the same rail if multiple ICs share the supply. The PIC16C5X family draws typical operating current of 1-2 mA at 5 MHz, rising to approximately 5 mA at 20 MHz. For battery-powered designs, use the SLEEP instruction to reduce quiescent current to <1 uA.

Route the crystal traces (OSC1 pin 16, OSC2 pin 17) as short as possible and guard them with a ground pour to reduce EMI pickup. Place the crystal within 0.5 inch (12 mm) of the MCU pins and keep digital signal traces (especially RB interrupt lines and T0CKI) away from the oscillator area. MCLR (pin 4) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; add a 100 nF cap to ground for noise immunity in industrial environments.

OTP (One-Time-Programmable) memory cannot be erased or rewritten once programmed - design for a programming socket or test clips if firmware iteration is expected. PIC16C5X uses a 12-bit instruction word that is incompatible with PIC16F and PIC18 instruction sets - existing PIC16F assembly code must be rewritten for the 5X core. The 2-level hardware stack means only 2 nested subroutines are supported; convert deep call trees to iterative loops or state machines. Code protection bits must be set AFTER final code verification, not during development, since protected parts cannot be read back.
